Common house flies are attracted to decaying organic matter, trash, and moist, rotting food, often entering homes to find food and breeding sites.
Causes of House Fly Infestation
- Decaying Organic Matter: The primary cause is rotting food, meat, garbage, or feces, which provides breeding material for larvae (maggots).
- Poor Sanitation & Food Access: Uncovered food, dirty dishes, spilled liquids, or overripe fruit attracts flies.
- Easy Access Points: Ripped window screens, open doors, or cracks in walls allow flies to enter.
- Moisture Sources: Standing water, leaky drains, or wet organic waste (like pet waste or lawn clippings) creates ideal breeding environments.
- Deceased Animals: Dead rodents or birds in walls or chimneys can cause a sudden, massive infestation.
Solutions and Prevention
- Sanitation (Deep Clean):
- Dispose of trash daily in tightly sealed containers.
- Clean garbage bins regularly to remove residue.
- Clean up pet waste immediately.
- Keep food in airtight containers and wipe surfaces clean.
- Exclusion (Keep Them Out):
- Install and repair screens on doors and windows.
- Use air curtains or fans near entrances.
- Environmental Management:
- Clean drains to prevent maggots.
- Reduce outdoor lighting at night to deter them from gathering.
